Roman Marble Head of a Young Man
perhaps Caligula

1st Century A.D.
Height: 4 1/8 in.

The physiogomy of Caligula is known from several published marble sculptures as well as coins. Perhaps the closest example that compares to the item offered here is in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, CA. The Getty head shows a slightly older individual than our piece; but the lips cheeks and nose are most similar, while the eyes are a bit wider in our example. A well executed, but probably provincial Roman sculpture
