Pierre-Francois Giffart (6137-1723) was an engraver and publisher of numerous scientific studies. He is associated with the "Dutch School" of engraving (Hind p.368.) The title page of the French editions of L'Antiquite Expliquee lists the engravers of the plates (above) and investors in the publishing enterprise, but individual engravings are left anonymous. In this context the engravings can be considered scientific illustrations rather than works of art, although many of the engravings transcend the mere descriptive.
